'Lost' paintings by 'Glasgow Boys' artist turn up over 10,000 miles away in New Zealand

Two 'lost' paintings by one of the leading members of the famous 'Glasgow Boys' movement of artists has turned up - over 10,000 miles away in New Zealand.

The rare paintings by Sir James Guthrie have gone up for auction in Auckland and are set to attract worldwide interest from bidders when they go under the hammer on Tuesday, reports The New Zealand Herald.

The two pieces – an 1886 oil painting entitled Boy with Straw Hat and a pastel of Cambuskenneth Ferry in Stirling from 1888 – are expected to fetch a combined price of between £56,000 and £78,500.

Although the Greenock-born artist painted both in his native Scotland, they ended up in Christchurch after being handed down to his descendants, three of whom in his two brothers and sister emigrated to New Zealand in the late 19th Century.

Guthrie was a leading member of a collection of influential artists and designers who came to be known as ‘The Glasgow Boys’, who were educated in Glasgow and did most of their work around the turn of the last century.

Some of his works can be found in Glasgow, including his fabulous 'Old Willie - The Village Worthy' portrait from 1886 and portrait of Maggie Hamilton from 1892-1893, both of which form part of the Scottish Art collection at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

Back in 2008, two of Guthrie's paintings were discovered in the loft of a house in Helensburgh, after being stolen along with three other valuable paintings from a home in the town six years earlier.
