Lost necklace on Pen Y Fan containing mum's ashes have been found - but the results are heartbreaking

A treasured necklace containing the ashes of a boy's mum has been found - but it's far from a happy ending.

The silver bullet-shaped necklace went missing while the boy was climbing Pen Y Fan in the Brecon Beacons on Thursday (March 28) - sparking a massive reaction on social media.

Following a Facebook appeal - shared thousands of times - it's been revealed that part of the necklace has been found.

But unfortunately, the pendant was broken - and the ashes had fallen out.

Last week, Bethan Jones, who had been climbing with the young boy, posted an appeal on Facebook urging walkers to keep an eye out for the item.

Ms Jones' original message read: "Whilst climbing up Pen Y Fan on Thursday night a young boy I look after lost his necklace that contains his mother’s ashes. If anyone is walking up there today please keep an eye out and let me know.

"If you know anyone climbing over the weekend please make them aware."

The post was shared more than 8,800 times and attracted 161 comments on Facebook and was also seen by tens of thousands of people on Twitter.

Kind-hearted walkers offered to climb the mountain to search for the necklace while others promised to keep an eye out for it.

But in an updated message Ms Jones wrote: "The necklace has been found and handed in.

"Unfortunately the bullet was broken and did not contain the ashes."

However, she said she was eternally grateful to the walkers who picked it up - before a woman got in touch and handed the necklace over.

News of the ashes being lost has been described as heartbreaking by Facebook users.

"Oh my god, that's so sad - that poor boy," one person wrote.

Another added: "I hope the little guy is okay. Just wish there was something that people could do for him."

This man climbs Pen y Fan every day and has been doing it for a year
