Lost hikers rescued from NT national park

Three hikers have been rescued after getting lost without water in the Northern Territory's Litchfield National Park.

The men, two aged 21 and one 23, started their trek on the Table Top Track about 7am on Wednesday, NT police say.

Seven hours later they'd run out of water, become disoriented and made the decision to call triple zero for assistance, a spokeswoman said on Thursday.

Local police and park rangers started an air search using a helicopter and quickly located the trio.

They were taken to Batchelor medical clinic for routine health checks and no further medical treatment was required.

"It was a sensible decision by the hikers to call triple zero for assistance at the earliest opportunity as it allowed us to locate the trio quickly," NT acting commander Brendan Muldoon said.

Commander Muldoon reminded hikers to pack enough water and a personal locator beacon if travelling remotely.

Litchfield National Park is about 100 km southwest of Darwin and is famous for its waterfalls including Florence and Wangi Falls.

The maximum temperature at Litchfield was 32C on Wednesday.
