Lost deer spotted wandering the empty streets of Newcastle during the coronavirus lockdown

Llandudno had its goats - now Newcastle has its deer.

With humanity largely forced indoors as a result of the lockdown caused by the coronavirus pandemic, there have been plenty of instances of animals moving into the usually busy streets.

The Kashmiri goats of Llandudno caught the public's imagination in March as a video of them taking over the Welsh town went viral.

Now CCTV cameras have captured a seemingly lost deer wandering into the centre of Newcastle on May 13, slowly walking through Bigg Market and stopping only to check the deserted side streets.

While the footage is not quite as dramatic as a herd of goats charging about, Newcastle Police circulated the video and took the opportunity to tweet some deer-based puns.

The tweet read: "Even lockdown couldn’t stop this stag from enjoying a night on the town.

"The party animal was so fawn’d of #Newcastle they had to have a waltz in the Bigg Market.

"It's sad to see the city so quiet but thank you for staying away. Yes, we’re fighting back the deers too!"

The video clearly brought a smile to many social media users' faces, if not the puns, although one was concerned about the safety of the creature.

In response, Newcastle Police said they only saw the CCTV footage and it seemed to be making its way out of the city towards the Town Moor.

They added: "There hasn't been any further sightings in the city so we assume she has found her family and friends nearby."
