Lost baby animals receive 'chaperone' assistance

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has sent veterinarians to "chaperone" two young animals which have strayed from their herds.

The orders were issued early this week after reports emerged of the two young animals going astray. The two animals are different species and not in the same location.

The first is a baby elephant which was found roaming alone in a forest in Chachoengsao province, in the eastern region.

The second is a four-month-old female dugong found on a beach in Krabi province.

Yuo Senatham, director of the 2nd Conservation Area Office based in Chon Buri province said the veterinary team yesterday examined the elephant calf and found it was thin but in good health.

"The calf remained in the same spot for almost a month in the belief its mother will come back," he said.

It is believed that the calf was separated from its herd after a group of locals tried to stop elephants from invading their farming areas, he added.

The team plan to look after the calf until its herd returns. If not, the team will take care of the little jumbo until it is strong enough to re-enter the forest.

In the case of a baby dugong, a veterinarian team from the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources will take care of it until it can survive alone or join a new group.

The young female dugong was found at the end of April. Local fishermen named her "Mariam".

The dugong was transported by veterinarians to Koh Libong in Trang province where trained staff were taking care of her until she is ready to be released back into the wild, according to the ministry.
