Lost and forfeited airport treasures auctioned for charity

Piles of scissors are lost to airport security every month.

Ever wondered what happened to that pair of scissors or hand cream bottle you had to surrender to airport security before boarding a plane?

Each month lost property and surrendered items are collected and auctioned off to the public.

While many items — scissors, knives, lighters — fall foul of carry-on baggage security rules, many others are simply forgotten in the terminal, handed in and never claimed.

For the past seven years boxes of these wayward items are gathered, packaged up and sent to Ross's Auction House to be sold off.

The proceeds have exceeded of $180,000, all of which has been donated to charity.

While some unusual items come through, it was the sheer quantity that astounded Dave Crofts from the auction house.

"We have been more surprised by the volume and value than actual individual items that were unusual," he told ABC Radio Perth.

"There is a gold buddha here at the moment, IT equipment, jewellery, cameras."

Saucepans and Nerf guns can't fly

Many people are unaware that toy weapons, or other items that could cause serious damage, cannot fly.

"We have had car pistons, Nerf guns, saucepans — both new and used," Mr Crofts said.

"Someone felt it would be a smart idea to take a big metal chain on the plane.

"We also have a very sharp hunting knife.

"It would be very obvious to me that you shouldn't take that on a plane but someone chose to and unfortunately it got surrendered."

From security risk to artwork

Smaller items, like scissors and lighters, are not sold individually but by the boxload.

"What was fairly unusual was that at our last auction, someone bought 12 boxes of those surrendered items," Mr Crofts said.

"When he came to pick them up I was curious what he was going to do with them and this person was an artist.

"Perhaps next year in Sculptures By The Sea you will see the surrendered items moulded into a sculpture."
