Los Angeles shooting: Four shot as woman opens fire downtown

Several people have been wounded after a female shooter, possibly accompanied by a man, opened fire in downtown Los Angeles.

Police officers are at the scene following the shooting shortly after noon local time in  San Julian Park at 5th and San Julian streets.

According to officials four people appear to have been shot, in the incident which locals have reported is possibly gang-related.

It is believed that the shooter or shooters are still at large and that two of the victims are female.

According to the LAPD the altercation was started in San Julian Park by people inside a white SUV, which sped away after the shooting.

The person believed to be the intended target was shot in the leg.

The three other people were not intended targets, ABC reported.

A social worker and a security guard who were in the park were also struck, both in the arm, by gunfire.

It is thought a man and a woman were in the SUV.

Three people have been taken to hospital for treatment.

There was a heavy police presence in the area after the shooting and paramedics could also be seen at the scene.

“This is unusual. You have the occasional shooting down here, but four is a lot,” Capt. Scott Harrelson told the LA Times.

The incident comes just weeks after a gunman opened fire in Walmart, in El Paso, Texas, killing 22 and injuring 24 people.

The massacre happened near the Cielo Vista Mall, a few miles from the US-Mexican border, in El Paso at 10:39am local time on August 3.

Shoppers fled for their lives after the shooter opened fire in the car park of a busy Walmart supermarket before storming the store and shooting "aisle to aisle", according to reports.

Less than 24 hours later, a gunman killed nine people and injured 27 outside a bar after he was denied entry.
