A newspaper launched to great fanfare in California in April this year is to close with immediate effect, says its publisher.

The Los Angeles Register was founded by Aaron Kushner, chief executive of the Freedom Communications group, which publishes the Orange County Register.

A memo signed jointly with his partner, Eric Spitz, said: "Pundits and local competitors who have closely followed our entry into Los Angeles will be quick to criticise our decision to launch a new newspaper and they will say that we failed.

"We believe, the true definition of failure is not taking bold steps toward growth."

The company will now focus on its core markets in Orange County, Riverside and San Bernardino counties where it has long enjoyed newspaper dominance.

It also announced the sale of the Register's headquarters in Santa Ana for $27m (£16.5m) to a local developer, which it will lease back. That move is aimed, said the memo, at strengthening Freedom's balance sheet.
