Los Angeles Lakers shutting LeBron James down for the rest of the season

On Saturday, the Los Angeles Lakers announced that they are shutting LeBron James down for the rest of the year. He’ll conclude his 16th season appearing in 55 games and averaging 27.4 points, 7.4 rebounds and 8.3 assists on 51% shooting from the field.

Statement via NBA.com:

The following statement was issued today by Lakers President of Basketball Operations, Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Lakers General Manager, Rob Pelinka:

“After consulting with our team doctors and medical staff, we have decided to hold LeBron out of games for the remainder of the season. This decision will allow his groin to fully heal, and is best for the future success of both LeBron and the Lakers.”

James will travel with the team on the upcoming road trip to New Orleans and Oklahoma City.

With only six games remaining, this seems like the best decision for all parties involved. There is nothing more LeBron or the Lakers can gain this season, and his nagging groin injury could only get worse with additional wear and tear. So while it’s shocking to see James finish a season for the first time in his career before the regular season schedule actually concludes, it’s a fitting end to a year in Los Angeles that fell far short of expectations.
