Lorry plunges into stream in Lampang, driver killed

LAMPANG: The driver of an 18-wheel container lorry was killed when he skidded off a road in Thoen district of this northern province and plunged into a stream below on Sunday morning, police said.

The accident occurred at about 6am between kilometre markers 624-625 on Phahom Yothin road (Lampang-Tak) in tambon Mae Thot, said Pol Capt Udom Tajai, a Thoen police investigator.

The container lorry belonged to Appa Forwarder Company of Bangkok and was delivering goods to department stores in Lamphun and Chiang Mai. While approaching a bridge across Mae Thanom stream, it skidded off the road and plunged 5 metres to smash into the stream bank under the bridge.

The truck driver, 34-year-old Yutthana Rakthapthim, was killed after being thrown out of the vehicle. His body was found face down on the bottom of the stream with one hand crushed under the vehicle's right front wheel.

Police were investigating the cause of the accident.
