Lorry ploughs into cars in German city as police investigate possible 'terrorism' motive

Police are investigating a 'suspected terror attack' in Germany after a lorry ploughed into cars at a set of traffic lights injuring eight people.

The incident occurred in the city of Limburg, near Frankfurt, shortly after 5pm last night (Monday).

The driver of the hijacked truck, who was also injured, was arrested at the scene.

Local news outlets have identified the man as a 32-year-old who moved to Germany from Syria in 2015, the Mirror reports.

Officials have not yet said how the incident is being classified but public broadcaster ZDF quoted sources as saying it was being treated by investigators as having a "terrorist background".

A spokesperson for West Hesse police said they were looking into all motives behind the incident, but added: "We currently do not have sufficient information about what was behind it."

According to a police statement, the lorry slammed into eight cars that were waiting at a set off traffic lights near the main railway station of Limburg in Hesse state, "crushing them together".
