Large tailbacks formed earlier on the M74 after a lorry overturned at Lesmahagow.
The incident happened around 06.35am at the Junction 10 northbound through Lanarkshire.
The third lane of the motorway was closed with traffic slowing on approach.
Junctions 10 and J12 remained closed as of 12.35pm this afternoon.
Drivers have been advised to use alternative routes if possible.
The accident occurred during strong winds and heavy rain caused by Storm Francis.
It is not known of weather played any part in the crash.
A second road accident on the M74 occurred between the Raith and Hamilton junctions.
One lane was restricted by the incident but has since reopened.
