Lorry on fire on M74 as police and fire crews race to motorway

A lorry went up in flames on the M74 motorway sparking a huge emergency service response.

Six fire appliances and police attended the incident near Ecclefechan at 1pm on Tuesday. Two lanes were closed off, and remain closed, as mercy crews clean up the area.

No details of any injuries are available at this stage.

Footage of the incident shows huge plumes of smoke billowing into the skyline as fire crews tackle the burning vehicle.

Fire crews can be seen on the road in the video, circling the lorry with hoses and spraying down the vehicle with water.

Traffic Scotland warned drivers to expect delays after the fire.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said they were in attendance and confirmed the road closure.

They said: “We were called to a report of a lorry fire on the M74 north of Ecclefechan at around 12.55pm on Tuesday, 13 September.

“A road closure is currently in place on the northbound carriageway with vehicles being diverted off at Junction 19.”

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 12.40pm on Wednesday, September 13 to reports of a trailer on fire on the northbound carriageway at junction 19 of the M74, near Ecclefechan.

“Operations Control mobilised six fire appliances and a specialist appliance.

"Crews are currently still at the scene and there are no reported casualties at this time.”
