Lorry loses roof in dramatic bridge crash by M53

A lorry's roof was taken off while going through a railway bridge close to the M53 on the Wirral.

Police confirmed the light Scania lorry lost part of its roof when its driver made an unsuccessful bid to negotiate the bridge on Woodchurch Road around 7.30am this morning.

The scene of the crash is close to junction 3 of the M53.

The driver avoided injury but the incident on the road - used by traffic heading to Arrowe Park hospital and Asda one way and the motorway the other way - sparked congestion with one lane closed in both directions.

Police said Network Rail inspected the bridge and deemed it was structurally safe to remain open and Wirral Council were organising the debris clear-up.

Buses were affected as a result of the crash.

Stagecoach tweeted its customers: "There has been a bridge strike on Woodchurch Road Birkenhead. This will affect all Woodchurch services. 471/472/41/42/16/17/608(School Bus).

"We will keep you updated of any diversions/punctuality issues. Please allow extra time for your journeys. Thanks."

A Merseyside police spokeswoman said: "We are called at 7.30am to reports a lorry had collided with  a bridge taking part of its roof off. It was a light Scania lorry."

As of 10am the road was fully open with the debris cleared and lorry removed.
