Lorry filmed crushing police car after being blown over in strong gale of wind

Two police officers had a lucky escape when a HGV toppled on top of his patrol car following a strong gusts of wind.

Chief Supt Stewart Carle was horrified when he saw the incident unfold while diverting the traffic on the busy A1 between Haddington and Dunbar in Scotland.

The officers were at the scene to assist other drivers as a lorry had already been blown over on the road.

The moment was captured on road security camera when the lorry tilted sideways - and landed on the front part of the police car.

The lorry was blown over in high winds and landed on top of a police patrol car (Universal News And Sport (Europe))

Mr Carle tweeted afterwards: "Relieved that one of my road patrol sergeants was not seriously injured earlier today on A1 carrying out scene protection after RTCs.

"Another HGV passing his static location was blown over onto the patrol car."

Officers probing the incident say there are no reports of serious injuries and that the stretch of road will remain closed in both directions until 10pm tonight at the earliest.

A spokesman from Police Scotland told Daily Record : "At around 10.15am on Tuesday, December 10 a lorry collided with a police vehicle on the A1 northbound between Dunbar and Haddington.

"There are no reports of serious injuries.

"The road will remain closed in both directions till 10pm tonight at the earliest whilst it is being cleared."

At around 3.30pm East Lothian Police released information for motorists following the incident.

"The A1 is currently closed between the Old Craighall junction at the A720, Edinburgh City Bypass, and Grantshouse for all HGVs.

"There is a further closure for all vehicles between the Abbots View roundabout, Haddington and the Thistly Cross Roundabout, Dunbar, due to an earlier crash involving HGVs.

"Please be advised that, due to the inclement weather , the road will remain closed between Dunbar and Haddington until at least 10pm tonight (Tuesday, 10 December) to allow for recovery of the vehicles.

"Due to the wind and poor weather conditions, it is currently not safe to attempt recovery of the HGVs and as such the road will remains closed until this has happened.

"The weather forecast indicates that the wind is due to drop this evening and once this happens recovery crews will be able to carry out their work in safer conditions.

"Please make arrangements for using alternative routes and be advised that diversions are in place.

"Please take care on the roads and drive with caution."
