Lorry driving granddad wins supercar worth more than a house in raffle

A lorry-driving grandad who won a £275k supercar in a raffle was amazed to find it looks just like the truck he uses at work.

Andrew Olsen, from Caerphilly, scooped the 200mph McLaren 720S Spider - one of the world's fastest road vehicles - after buying a £25 ticket from charity fundraisers Omaze. But, when the four-litre twin-turbocharged head turner arrived at his Risca -based HGV yard, the 60-year-old was struck by a certain similarity.

"When the blokes who delivered it saw the truck I use to move Arctic trailers around they said 'Oh, we need to take a photo of the car with that' - it was virtually the same colour," said Andrew.

"The McLaren goes a bit faster, mind you - 0 to 60 in two secs with a top speed of 212mph. Omaze's test driver took me out in it the other day - I've never been so exhilarated and frightened at the same time. 55mph is usually the fastest I can go."

Andrew added that he'd initially bought a ticket to the draw a few weeks ago - the proceeds from which go to Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital. The supercar was just one of the early bird prizes on offer.

"After I'd bought a ticket I completely forgot all about it," he added.

"But then I got an email saying, 'Congratulations, you've won' - but it didn't clarify what exactly.

"But, when I got a phone call actually telling me, I was stunned - in total disbelief. And, because the car's so expensive to run, they even gave me £10k for its upkeep."

However, Andrew said he'll probably sell it eventually: "With that kind of money I could retire and buy a house for my boy. Besides, where on Earth am I going to park a thing like that round here?"
