A lorry driver stopped traffic to help a woman in distress on a M53 bridge.

A Cheshire Police PC publicly thanked members of the public who rushed to the woman's aid after emergency services were called to reports of concern for safety.

Police were called between junction eight and nine of the busy motorway at about 1pm, on January 20, to help the woman.

Two women had already stopped to try and help the woman and a lorry stopped traffic on the carriageway below.

Posting on Twitter , Ellesmere Port Police said: "PC Walton just wanted to say a massive thank you to all of the public who stopped to help the female in distress above Junction 8 of the M53 motorway.

"She's now getting the help and support she needs at hospital."

A spokeswoman for Cheshire Police said: "At 12.59pm on 20 January police were called to a motorway bridge over the M53 between junction eight and nine following reports of concern for safety.

"Two women had stopped to speak to the woman and a lorry had stopped traffic on the carriageway below.
