Police are appealing for witnesses after a lorry driver died in a horror crash on the M6 motorway early this morning.
A HGV left the carriageway at Junction 25 for Bryan, Wigan, at around 6.20am.
According to the ambulance service, it appeared that a man in his 60s fell ill at the wheel.
He was taken to hospital in a critical condition but sadly died, police said.
His family is being supported by specially trained officers.
Motorists faced delays of around an hour after the northbound carriageway had to be closed and diversions put in place.
A tweet from North West Motorway Police said: "M6 1 vehicle (Lorry) RTC Just prior to J25 Northbound. J25 to J26 now closed.
"We now have reports that Traffic is stationary back to J23.

"If you can find an alternative route this would assist us. Accident investigation are now making to the scene of the RTC."
The motorway has since reopened.
