Lorry driver 'could have died' after teens dropped sandbag through windscreen from M5 motorway bridge

A lorry driver suffered a near-miss last night (October 31) when youngsters sent a sandbag crashing through his windscreen.

Police are now hunting for three teenagers following the scary scenes on the M5 southbound in Gloucestershire near to the Tewkesbury junction.

The shocked driver managed to regain control of his vehicle but police say the outcome could have been much worse.

Gloucestershire police officer Tim Griffiths said: "If he had been rendered unconscious or had lost control of his lorry then we could easily have been dealing with serious injuries or fatalities."

The teenagers were standing on a bridge at around 11pm when they dropped a hessian sandbag which smashed through the windscreen and sprayed sand everywhere.

The group, who were wearing dark clothing, are described as being between 15-16 years old and quite short.

Mr Griffiths urged the teens to come forward, while also appealing for any witnesses - especially those with dashcam footage.

He said: "I suspect this is probably the actions of someone out on Halloween with their friends, probably showing off and messing around, who thought it would be funny to throw the sandbag at the lorry, not thinking about the ramifications of their actions.

"I cannot stress in the most serious terms how dangerous it is to do such a stupid thing. The lorry driver could have been seriously hurt or even killed.
