Lorry driver accused of causing serious injury after crash on A69

A lorry driver has appeared in court accused of causing serious injury by dangerous driving after a crash on the A69.

The collision happened between two HGVs on the road at Haydon Bridge on November 4 last year.

Robert Hogg appeared in the dock at South East Northumberland Magistrates' Court on Thursday accused of causing serious injury to the other lorry driver involved in the accident.

The 47-year-old, of Magnolia Walk, Spennymoor, County Durham, spoke only for confirm his name, age, address and nationality and to plead not guilty to the charge.

Ami Dodd, prosecuting, said the alleged victim had to undergo four operations because of "numerous fractures to his body".

Because of the level of injury, she said the case was too serious to be heard in a magistrates' court.

Miss Dodd added: "I would suggest this should be sent to the crown court."

Declining jurisdiction, District Judge Bernard Beglay said: "My sentencing powers are a maximum of six months.

"I'm satisfied this is a case outside of my sentencing powers, should the defendant be found guilty."

Hogg was released on unconditional bail to next appear at Newcastle Crown Court on December 5.

ChronicleLive previously reported how the A69 was closed for several hours due to the "complex recovery" of the two lorries.

Both Mr Hogg and the alleged victim, Neil Ironside, were taken to hospital following the accident with serious injuries.
