Lorry crashes into Southport Pier forcing venues to close

Part of Southport Pier has been closed after a lorry collided with the bottom of it.

The units on the landward side of the pier are open today, but the Pier Pavilion and other venues further along will not be able to be accessed.

A spokesman for Sefton Council said: “We are aware of an incident yesterday where a heavy goods vehicle struck the underside of Southport Pier.

“We have taken the decision to temporarily close off the seaward end of the Pier while we await a structural assessment to determine if any repairs need to take place.”

On their Facebook page, Southport Pier Pavilion wrote: "The pier is currently closed from the gates onward as on Thursday morning a lorry driver 'drove into' the pier off Marine Drive."

They went on to mention the loss caused to their business and its staff who they said were "just getting back to normality after Covid".

The post continued: "On visual inspection, the pier is fine. The lorry merely scraped off some paint.

“However, [we cannot reopen] until a council engineer says so.

“This is an awful predicament we are in yet again. Right at the start of the summer holidays. This is devastating for us.

“Our other units on the first half of the pier remain open as usual today and we hope that you’ll pay us a visit and show some support.

“Thanks and see you soon!”
