Lorry crash shuts A9 in both directions as emergency services race to scene

A lorry crash shut a major Scots road this morning with emergency services racing to the scene.

All lanes of the A9 were closed in both directions near the village of Latheron in Caithness after the collision involving an HGV.

Parts of Scotland and particularly the Highlands and north-east have been battered by unseasonal snow today causing havoc for some motorists.

Traffic Scotland had warned drivers to plan their routes ahead of the deluge and not take to the roads if not.

Transport chiefs closed the road at 8.10am following the crash and it reopened just over an hour later.

No one was injured in the incident that only involved one vehicle.

A tweet from Traffic Scotland read: "The #A9 is CLOSEDNo entry at Latheron due to an RTC involving a lorry

"Please #UseAltRoute meantime

"The A9 is closed in both directions at Latheron, this is due to a road traffic incident. Road users should expect longer than normal journey times and use an alternative route."

A fire engine was called to the scene to make vehicles safe while it is understood an ambulance was also in attendance.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said: "We received the call from the ambulance service at 8.29am.

"We have an appliance there at the moment, we were just called to make the vehicles safe.

"The stop message came back at 8.41am."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 7.35am on Monday, 5 April, we received a report of a one vehicle crash involving a lorry that had become jack-knifed on the A9 at Latheron.

“The road was closed for a short time to allow for recovery of the vehicle and fully reopened around 9.05am.”
