A lorry has crashed and spilled tonnes of tomato puree all over the road leaving it looking like a "horror film", police said.
The truck spilled its load of tomatoes and olive oil all over the A14 in Cambridgeshire after colliding with another lorry.
A picture shared by police shows the bright red puree covering a vast stretch of road as the crash bought traffic to a standstill near Godmanchester, Cambridgeshire.
The driver of one of the two lorries was taken to hospital but has since been discharged after the crash along a westbound lane on Tuesday evening.
Cambridgeshire Police tweeted pictures of the mess, writing: "What looked like the set of a horror film was actually thousands of squashed tomatoes.
"The incident on the A14 at Godmanchester yesterday evening involved two jack-knifed lorries, including one carrying tons of olive oil and tomatoes. The road reopened just before 1pm today."
The clean-up operation continued into Wednesday as crews were faced with the task of removing litres of tomato puree from the road.
In the picture shared by British Transport Police, the lorry's spillage painted the road a vibrant red.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing, Cambridgeshire Live reports.
Despite the mess, some could not resist an opportunity to flex their pun skills.
One calling it "a disaster, puree simple", according to the BBC.
One BBC Radio 2 listener asked if it "was suitable for traffic to passata safe distance".
Another tweet read: "Some of our drivers had to go pasta this earlier today. They are starting to ketchup after the delay though."
The stretch of road was closed for the clean up, but has since reopened.
Highways England completed the repair works at around 1.25pm Wednesday, around 20 hours after the road was first closed.
