Lorry burst into flames after brakes caught fire causing closure of A71 road

A lorry burst into flames on the A71 late last night as fire crews raced to the scene.

Cops warned motorists the busy road, at Dalmahoy in Edinburgh, was closed heading westbound while they dealt with the incident.

The blaze was in the trailer of an articulated lorry after the brakes caught fire. It's understood the lorry was not carrying hazardous materials.

One fire engine initially raced to the scene but two further crews had to be called in to get the flames under control.

It's understood no one was injured in the incident and the vehicle is being recovered this morning.

A Police Scotland spokesman said on Sunday night: "Emergency services are currently dealing with a road traffic incident on the A71 near to Dalmahoy Hotel. The road is currently close westbound."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a lorry alight at 20.58pm on Sunday, June 28. One appliance was initially despatched but two extra appliances were requested.

"The fire was within the trailer of an articulated lorry containing food.

"Crews remained at the scene until around 22.50pm."
