Lorraine says she doesn't like Princess Diana statue as it 'doesn't do her justice'

ITV's Lorraine Kelly has said she's not a fan of the new Princess Diana statue which was unveiled by Prince William and Prince Harry yesterday.

The Duke of Cambridge and the Duke of Sussex reunited on Thursday, July 1 at Kensington Palace's Sunken Garden to mark what would have been their mother's 60th birthday.

In a poignant moment the brothers pulled away a green cloth to reveal the new monument, which aimed to reflect Diana's "warmth, elegance and energy".

Created by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley, the figure of the princess is surrounded by three children and depicts Diana in the later years of her life. You can read more about it here.

But during her show on Friday Lorraine admitted she wasn't a fan of the sculpture, although liked the "really lovely sentiments" and "good intentions" behind it.

"Can I just say, I don't really like it," she told royal commentator Russel Myers, who was appearing on the show.

"I'm sorry," she said. "I don't know what you think, but I don't really like the outfit.

"What I do like is the strength, she looks very strong."

Lorraine continued: "I just don't think it does her justice."

She later added: "Of course, it was all about the boys and if they're happy, then that's fine.

"Maybe it looks better in real life. I have to reserve judgement until I can see it for myself."

Yesterday Kensington Palace explained the meaning behind the statue.

A statement read: "The figure of Diana, Princess of Wales, is surrounded by three children who represent the universality and generational impact of The Princess' work.

"The portrait and style of dress was based on the final period of her life as she gained confidence in her role as an ambassador for humanitarian causes and aims to convey her character and compassion."

Lorraine continues weekdays at 9am on ITV.
