Viewers of Lorraine were left pleasantly surprised after catching a glimpse of the ITV host’s real look on Wednesday’s show when she casually removed one of her hair extensions live on air. The moment happened during a chat with celebrity stylist Richard Ward, and fans couldn’t get enough of Lorraine’s honesty and sense of humour.
While reaching behind her head, Lorraine smiled and told the audience, “Can I just say, every morning when I’m on the telly, I have these wee things.” She then unhooked a clip-in extension and swung it around her head like a lasso. “Look, da, da, da, da,” she laughed.
Her guest was instantly impressed. “Oh my god, that’s fantastic,” Richard said, to which Lorraine replied, “Aren’t they great? I don’t do it for real, true life, but I do it for telly. Helen puts them in in the morning,” she explained, referring to her hairstylist.
Taking it one step further, Lorraine cheekily stretched the hairpiece across her face and below her chin. “Look, ta da! It can double as a beard,” she joked. Richard laughed along, saying, “That is amazing.” Lorraine added, “It just gives you a little bit more round there.”
The clip quickly went up on Lorraine’s official Instagram account later that day, and the response from fans was nothing short of full-on love. “I just love you,” said one follower, Jai. Another fan, Belle, wrote, “Love Lorraine!” Deb commented, “She is so real and down to earth.” Rachael Woolston added: “You should do a little segment on this as I know lots of women suffer from thinning hair in midlife.” Jud chipped in with, “Yes, do a feature of hair pieces, wigs, supplements, etc!!”
On Facebook, the comments kept coming, with viewers praising Lorraine for being so open about a topic many feel self-conscious about discussing. One said, “I love you and your honesty, you make us all feel real.” Another added, “Well done, Lorraine.”
Lorraine’s light-hearted reveal came just after Richard Ward had given a viewer a gorgeous on-air transformation to help with hair thinning. Ahead of his appearance, Richard told followers he’d be tackling the issue of thinning hair due to ageing, menopause, illness, or long COVID. “If you’ve been holding onto long hair that’s lost its fullness, don’t miss this,” he said. “With the right cut and care, thinning hair can still look incredible.”
Hair thinning affects loads of women, especially as they reach midlife. Around half of women over 70 deal with female-pattern baldness, and many experience changes during pregnancy, perimenopause and menopause. Even temporary loss after having a baby is normal.
According to the NHS, hair loss can be triggered by stress, medical conditions like thyroid issues, hormonal changes, or even tight hairstyles and poor diet. It can be sudden or gradual and impact people of all ages.
But moments like Lorraine’s are a reminder that it’s OK to talk about it. Her unfiltered moment made people laugh and helped normalise a subject that’s often hushed. Viewers appreciated it, and let’s be honest, we need more telly like that.
