Lorraine Kelly was 'fired for having baby' and almost never worked in TV again

Scottish daytime TV icon Lorraine Kelly's decade-spanning career was almost cut short after she was fired for giving birth to her daughter Rosie.

Lorraine gave birth in 1994 and was working at TV-am at the time, where her career started as a Scotland correspondent.

As reported by The Mirror, she was sacked shortly after Rosie was born.

Speaking to Kate Thornton on her White Wine Question Time podcast, the presenter said: "They told me not to come back.

“They basically said ‘Thanks very much and cheerio’ because they had someone else.

"Anthea Turner was brought in to present with Eamonn (Holmes).

“It was a long, long time ago – 27 years ago – because Rosie is 27."

The experience of being fired shortly after giving birth was worrying, she told Kate.

“It was really frightening. I had this really tiny baby and I wasn’t sure what was going to happen.”

Lorraine's TV career was saved by a brand who told TV bosses at the network that they would only sponsor a mother and baby slot on the show if Lorraine was going to present it.

Speaking on the podcast alongside daughter Rosie, Lorraine said: “Luckily there was a mum and baby company – I think it was Cow & Gate or something – who wanted to do a mum and baby slot.

“They wouldn’t do it unless I did it. So that was a way back, if you like.

“It was so successful that they ended up giving me my own show.”
