Lorraine Kelly tells UK Eurovision entry he wouldn't have won if final went ahead

Lorraine Kelly left some viewers stunned this morning, during an interview with Eurovision hopeful James Newman.

James was the UK's 2020 entry for the annual competition, as different countries compete against each other for the title.

With the coronavirus pandemic ongoing, the normal live final set to be hosted in Rotterdam, the Netherlands has been cancelled.

Instead, it has been replaced with a show celebrating the best songs from over the years, while the 2020 artists will also perform together.

Data has also been released detailing who was likely to have won if the final went ahead.

James appeared on Lorraine on Friday to discuss his disappointment over not being able to perform.

He went on to reveal whether he would be returning in 2021.

But viewers found Lorraine a little brutal, when she told the singer he "probably wouldn't have won" the final if it had gone ahead.

She told him: "I mean we know we have to be realistic don't we.

"We know that we probably wouldn't have won because it is all political voting and the rest of it, it's all very silly."

James remained silent, as viewers took to Twitter over the awkward comment.

One viewer said: "Rub it in why don’t you Lorraine!" as others agreed.

Lorraine hadn't meant to cause offence obviously, with the UK very rarely doing well on the show - and not having won since 1997.

Viewers always blast the voting on the show, with it never really about the best singer or best song.

Lorraine went on to praise the song, before asking if he would make a comeback.

She said: "What a great song, it was really good and we reckon we would have done better with your song... your song would have been the best we have done for years, so it's a shame."

James revealed the 2020 acts have been given permission to return again next year, but must perform a new song.

He confessed he would love a second chance, but is waiting for the BBC to invite him.

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
