Lorraine Kelly stands by Piers Morgan after he quits GMB

Lorraine Kelly has praised Piers Morgan for being a 'loyal friend' after he quit Good Morning Britain.

The presenter left the ITV morning show following a backlash against his incendiary comments about Meghan and her headline-making interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Broadcaster ITV announced in a brief statement late on Tuesday that Morgan was leaving the news programme.

Piers has since said he stands by his comments and does not believe what Meghan told Oprah, after she discussed her issues with mental health and suicidal thoughts.

Before leaving the show, Piers had stormed off the set following a heated discussion with his colleague, Alex Beresford, about the duchess.

Speaking about his exit from the show, Susanna Reid said to Lorraine: "Unique is the word to describe Piers Morgan - you either loved him or in some cases people hated him.

"[He was] hugely popular with many, many viewers, hugely controversial and had many many critics, but a big presence."

Lorraine added: "Huge presence and actually, you know what a very loyal friend is all I can say as well.

"Anybody that's ever been in trouble or has needed his help, he has been there.

"So you have to take your hats of to him and wish him well for the future and whatever he decides to do."

Ofcom announced on Tuesday that it is investigating comments Piers made about the interview.

The watchdog received more than 41,000 complaints about his remarks on Monday's Good Morning Britain.
