Lorraine Kelly presents mum who founded Scottish homeless charity major award

A mum who founded a Scottish homeless charity has been presented with a major award from Lorraine Kelly.

Laura McSorley won the Women of the Year Kindness Award at the Women of the Year Awards.

Taking place on Monday October 11, Laura was recognised for setting up the 'Kindness Homeless Street Team.'

Starting with just £5, the street team now provide hot meals and essential items to thousands of homeless and vulnerable people.

It comes after viewers of Lorraine Kelly's eponymous ITV show voted for her to be recognised for all of her hard work and dedication.

Members of Lorraine's team arrived at Laura's home in Glasgow with bagpipes to inform her that she was one of three finalists.

She broke down into tears as Lorraine told her: "Wonderful. What an amazing amazing woman. All of our finalists are incredible.

"I'm glad I don't have to vote cause three finalists are just so good."

Laura said: "I'm a bit overwhelmed. I think I'm crazy to be honest. These guys are amazing, We do it together."

One volunteer said the Glasgow mum had made a "huge difference" to homeless people in the city.

Another added that Laura always made time to help people despite having her own family.

Viewers were also told how she had started the street team from the boot of the car and helped hundreds during the pandemic.

Congratulations and notes of appreciation for Laura all poured in across social media.

Carol Murray who nominated her said: “Well done to our Laura McSorley, never a doubt that you wouldn’t win and it is totally deserved..

“Laura would like to thank each and everyone that has supported and voted for her.

“Laura didn’t set up her kindness homeless charity for praise or recognition but only to help others as that is her passion.

“Our very own Kindness Woman of the Year!”

Laura has previously been sent a letter from Boris Johnson praising her for providing a 'much-needed sense of comfort.'

He also honoured her with a special Point of Light award.
