Lorraine Kelly made her long-awaited return to work on Monday, 19 May, after taking time off to recover from surgery earlier this month. The much-loved Scottish presenter had an operation to remove her fallopian tubes and ovaries – and while she’s feeling much better, there’s one thing about her recovery that’s getting under her skin.
Appearing on Good Morning Britain before heading back to host her show, Lorraine, the 65-year-old was met with warm words from Susanna Reid, who told her she was “looking great.” Lorraine, ever the open book, didn’t hold back about what she’d been through in recent weeks, OK! Magazine.
“I had a burst cyst coming back on the plane in January,” she explained, talking about a scare she had while returning from India. “I was returning from India, and I had this cyst that burst. An ovarian cyst.” That incident led to scans, and while it turned out to be nothing sinister, doctors spotted something else that looked suspicious.
“To be safe and to prevent anything awful happening, we cut it out,” Lorraine said, as reported by Edinburgh Live. “I underwent keyhole surgery, I’ve got three new holes, trio of them, keyhole surgery to whip out the ovaries and fallopian tubes. So everything is good, nothing sinister, it’s all good.”
She’s clearly relieved the procedure went well, but there’s one thing she’s really missing – cuddling her granddaughter. “One night in hospital, two weeks recovery, I’ve just got to take it easy,” she said. “The only thing I can’t do, which is so frustrating, I can’t hold Billie!”
She shared a moment from her check-up, where her daughter Rosie had taken her along with baby Billie. “Mr Raafat was holding Billie, and I said, When can I hold her? Billie is a chunk, a gorgeous chunk, and he went: ‘Oh, not until the end of the month!’”
Earlier this month, Lorraine gave fans a heads-up with a video message, saying: “Hi there, it’s Lorraine here, just wanted to let you know I’m having a wee procedure today. I’ve not been feeling all that well for a little while.” She reassured everyone that it was “purely preventative” and praised the keyhole surgery process and the care she received.
She later posted a heartfelt thank-you to her medical team on Instagram, saying: “Huge thanks to these kind, caring, gorgeous professionals who took care of me at @heatherwoodhospital… My surgeon, Mr Ahmed Rafaat, has been so reassuring throughout – and I can’t thank the whole team enough!”
