Minutes later when they returned to the show, Dr Amir explained all.

The programme is joining in with International Friendship Month, which runs throughout February, and a friendship Lorraine has was first to be celebrated.

Lorraine was shown a series of throwback snaps and a video interview with one of her best friends, Joyce.

The Scottish host became tearful as Joyce spoke about their relationship and all the ups and downs they have faced together.

But that wasn't the end of the surprise.

As the video finished, Dr Amire told Lorraine: "Well Lorraine, watching that I think we all want to be your best friend. But that isn't the last of the surprise. We have got someone really special here for you."

The LED screen - which also acts as sliding doors - then opened with Joyce stepping through.

Lorraine screamed and said: "Shut up," clearly shocked at their reunion live on TV.

"Oh, I'm not allowed to hug you am I?" Lorraine said with a few tears. "We're not allowed!

"I can't believe you kept this from me! How did you manage to keep that from me?"

Joyce replied: "Because I'm a cheeky monkey."

The pair the sat down for a chat, alongside Dr Amir, about their friendship and Lorraine was excitedly planning their night out.

"I'm flabbergasted," she said as their on-air chat started to come to an end.

"I'm so pleased," Joyce, who lives in France, said.
