Lorraine Kelly hits out at Westminster Bridge clappers for standing too close together

Lorraine Kelly has hit out at the large group of people who congregated on Westminster Bridge on Thursday evening.

Footage of people ignoring social distancing measures has gone viral after being captured on camera during the weekly ‘clap for our carers’ cheer.

The Scottish TV presenter was visibly exasperated by the gathering, near St Thomas' hospital in London, which appeared to break the two-metre rule put in place to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Lorraine, 60, was discussing the issue with Dr Hilary Jones in Good Morning Britain’s extended hour.

She said: "Now look, I was a bit confused because there was some footage on social media today and it was from last night on Westminster Bridge.

"Understandably everyone wanted to say thank you, but look  - there’s no social distancing there.

“The police are there though.

"Where are all these people coming from?

“Round there, there’s not many houses. There are a few, but not many. Where are they coming from?

"They’re all too close. If they were coming out of hospital would they not be on the other side of the river?"

The doc was equally unimpressed with the clappers’ lack of care over the government’s lockdown rules, which have been extended for three more weeks.

He called the gathering “counterproductive” and said that socila distancing is “more important than ever”.

Dr Hilary said: "When you see people on their front doorstep they are separated from their neighbours.

"This is counterproductive. We want to clap and say thank you but social distancing is more important than ever."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
