Lorraine Kelly hails Piers Morgan as 'loyal friend' and says breakfast TV 'won't be the same'

Lorraine Kelly was quick to show her support for Piers Morgan on Wednesday morning before hosting her own ITV show.

The 61-year-old star spoke briefly to Susanna Reid and Ranvir Singh as they hosted Good Morning Britain, and of course the topic of Piers' departure came up.

Speaking about Piers no longer hosting alongside Susanna, Lorraine said: "Tell you what, he will be missed. I know that Piers divided opinion, of course he did, there was that Marmite factor.

"But you sometimes you would hear people say, 'oh I don't like him, but what's he saying?' It was that kind of thing, a little bit.

Lorraine Kelly showed her support for Piers Morgan on Wednesday and said he is a 'loyal friend' (ITV)

"So, yes it will be a lot quieter and a lot calmer, but he definitely will be missed, but he brought something quite extraordinary and I don't think breakfast television will ever be the same again, that's for sure.

"And you know what, a very loyal friend. Anyone that’s ever been in trouble and needed his help, he has been there."

Piers Morgan quit his role as a Good Morning Britain presenter on Tuesday (ITV)

Lorraine's comments come after she was quizzed about the news during an appearance on The One Show on Tuesday evening.

Hosts Alex Jones and Rylan Clarke-Neal wasted no time in quizzing Lorraine on the dramatic news - which came after Ofcom revealed they were investigating Piers' conduct.

Lorraine let slip that Piers privately emailed her shortly before the announcement was made.

Ranvir Singh hosted the show alongside Susanna Reid on Wednesday (ITV)

"He did actually email me about 20 minutes ago, so that was the first that I’d heard of it," she explained.

"No real details, he just said ‘I’m gone’, he just said he’s away, so yeah, looks like he has, I don’t know any more details than that. It’s certainly going to be quieter!"

Speaking about the reaction from her ITV colleagues, Lorraine said: "We all wish him well, we all wish him all the best, of course we do. But yeah, like I say, it will be… calmer I think."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
