Lorraine Kelly breaks silence over Piers Morgan as he quits GMB

Lorraine Kelly has had her say following the news that Piers Morgan had quit Good Morning Britain.

The host of ITV's chat show Lorraine, which is screened immediately after GMB, spoke out on The One Show about his departure.

Lorraine said Piers had only just emailed her to break the news and said she had "no real details."

"It's certainly going to be quieter," she said.

"We all wish him well. We all wish him absolutely all the best. Like I say, it will be calmer."

Twitter has been reacting to the news, including former Star Trek actor George Takei who said: "Piers Morgan apparently has cancelled himself. Cancel culture!"

And TV rival Dan Walker from BBC Breakfast said: "Sorry to hear the news about your departure from GMB @piersmorgan.

"If you'd like to come on the UK's number 1 breakfast show to talk about it ... we could make some space for you in the morning."

And Sharon Osbourne, who was a judge alongside Piers on America's Got Talent, showed her support.

"@piersmorgan I am with you. I stand by you," she tweeted.

"People forget that you're paid for your opinion and that you're just speaking your truth."

Piers, 55, quit Good Morning Britain following his controversial comments about Meghan Markle after the screening of her interview by Oprah Winfrey in America on Sunday.

Ofcom is now investigating after Good Morning Britain received more than 41,000 complaints.

The TV watchdog has launched an investigation into Monday’s episode of the breakfast show, during which Piers made dismissive comments about Meghan, under its harm and offence rules.

Piers prompted a furious reaction when said he didn't believe the Duchess of Sussex when she said in a bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey that she had suicidal thoughts while living as a royal and pregnant with her son Archie.

He was also criticised by the mental health charity Mind after he said: "Who did you go to? What did they say to you? I’m sorry, I don’t believe a word she says, Meghan Markle."

And he went on about Meghan, who quit royal duties with her husband Prince Harry and started a new life in America: "I wouldn’t believe it if she read me a weather report.

"The fact that she’s fired up this onslaught against our royal family I think is contemptible."

Mind posted a statement on Twitter ahead of the UK airing of the interview on Monday night saying they were 'in conversations' with ITV which launched a Be Kind campaign with its flagship morning show This Morning and has led the mental wellness campaign Britain Get Talking since 2019.

We were disappointed and concerned to see Piers Morgan's comments about not believing Meghan Markle's experiences about suicidal thoughts today," the charity said.

"It's vital that when people reach out for support or share their experiences of ill mental health that they are treated with dignity, respect and empathy."
