Lorraine Kelly branded killjoy by angry viewers after telling people to 'forget' Halloween

Lorraine Kelly has been branded a 'killjoy' by irate viewers after telling people to forget about Halloween this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

This week brings half term for many children across the UK, a time that is normally filled with all manner of spooky activities in the run up to Halloween.

It's not just kids who go all out for the annual occasion either and the fact that it falls on a Saturday for the first time in ages, has meant that revellers have been left even more frustrated by the current situation, which has ruined many plans for a big fancy dress night out.

And, addressing the issue on her show on Monday, TV host Lorraine said people should 'just not' celebrate Halloween this year.

Speaking to TV medic Doctor Hilary Jones, she said: "Halloween is looming....it's probably best just not. Some people are saying maybe just do this, do that...I don't want to be a killjoy, but just to say 'that's it' this year, sorry!"

Reacting to her advice, Dr Hilary replied: "In tier 3 it's effectively banned as different households would be mixing and, even outdoors, that's not allowed.

"And if you think about children with buckets of communal sweets outside the front door....who's touched those wrappers? How many children? So you're increasing the risk of transmission by doing that.

"And then if you call on an elderly person's house, you mean well but you are exposing those vulnerable people."

Having the last word, Lorraine added: "It's probably best just for clarity, to say no for this year but then make up for it next year."

However, some viewers did not agree with Lorraine's stance or take kindly to her telling people what to do. One tweeted: "Cancelling halloween stupidity. Children have been in school and not caught anything. Wrapped sweets in bucket by the door will not infect old people. Let someone have some fun this year."

Another reacted: "None of us want to be killjoys.....you’ve done a bloody good job for the past 6 months."
