Lorraine Kelly baffled as Sir Paul McCartney claims John Lennon broke up The Beatles

Lorraine Kelly questioned why Sir Paul McCartney has put blame on John Lennon for ending the The Beatles over 50 years after the legendary band split up in 1970.

During Tuesday’s episode of Lorraine, speaking to Ross King, the 61-year-old presenter was taken aback to hear Paul admit that John was the reason for The Beatles’ break-up, despite many years of people believing it was the other way around.

Talking in an upcoming BBC Radio 4 interview, the musician, 79, explained that he was "not the person who instigated the split", sharing that it "was our Johnny".

Lorraine said on her show: "It’s interesting now he’s come out and said that. He could have said that at any time, it’s quite fascinating isn’t it?

"It was a very very long time ago, but people are still interested," she added.

Paul said on BBC Radio 4 that: "John walked into a room one day and said I am leaving the Beatles. It’s quite thrilling, it’s rather like a divorce, and then we were left to pick up the pieces."

The Hey Jude music legend revealed the band ‘could have’ carried on as he wanted them to if it wasn’t for Lennon’s departure as they were "doing some pretty good stuff – Abbey Road, Let It Be, not bad".

Paul described it as: "the most difficult period of my life".

The Beatles legend spoke of Lennon’s ‘new life’ with Yoko Ono and how the couple wanted "to lie in bed for a week in Amsterdam for peace".

Paul is still performing as a solo artist as well as running a side venture growing organic hemp on his farm estate in Peamarsh, near Rye.

The musician has a large family to keep him busy with eight grandchildren between his two daughters, fashion designer Stella, 50, and Mary, 52.

Alongside Stella and Mary, Paul is also dad to step-daughter Heather, 58, son James, 44, who he shares with late wife Linda, as well as 17-year-old daughter Beatrice from his marriage to Heather Mills.

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
