TV doctor Hilary Jones has lashed out at Boris Johnson’s father Stanley after he was pictured in a shop not wearing a mask.
The story has caused widespread outrage - and came after Mr Johnson had already been caught out flouting lockdown restrictions before.
And in a damning comment on ITV show Lorraine, Doctor Hilary said Stanley was either ‘pompous and arrogant, or forgetful and stupid. Take your pick.’
Johnson was pictured in the Mirror newspaper at a newsagents in west London on Tuesday, seemingly breaking the rules by not covering his mouth and nose.
Dr Hilary added: “His excuse was that he just returned to the country.
“He also gave excuses about flying to Bulgaria and then his Greek hideaway. It is either pompous and arrogant, or forgetful and stupid. Take your pick.”
The picture emerged after fines increased to £200 last week for first time offenders who fail to wear a face covering in accordance with Government guidance.
“Absolutely, he should be fined,” said Dr Hilary on Lorraine today, adding: “It would be a good example.”
“He is the Prime Minister’s father. He knows what the rules are. The rules have been there for some time. The rules are that it is mandatory to wear a face mask in a shop or supermarket.
Speaking to the Mirror, Stanley Johnson said he may not be “100% up to speed” with current rules as he had just returned to England after three weeks abroad.
“I’m extremely sorry for the slip up and I would urge absolutely everybody to do everything they can to make sure they do follow the rules about masks and social distancing,” he said.
“The fact this was my first day back in the UK after three weeks abroad is, I am sure, no excuse for not knowing the rules.”
