Lorraine Kelly condemns 'cess pit' of racist abuse after England lose on penalties

L:orraine Kelly has hit out at the 'cesspit' of racist abuse that has been aimed at several England players after the side's loss to Italy on penalties on Sunday night.

After getting off the best possible start courtesy of a Luke Shaw goal, Gareth Southgate's men ended up losing on penalties in the Euro 2020 final after Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka missed their spot kicks.

The trio were quickly on the end of absolutely appalling abuse which has been condemned by both Boris Johnson and the FA.

And, reacting to England's defeat on her show on Monday morning, Lorraine took aim at those responsible for it, saying: "Sadly, and we know that social media can be a cesspit of abuse and, very sadly, there has actually been a lot of racist abuse on these three players and that is unacceptable.

"We need to try...there must be a way that we can find out who these people are and actually call them out...fine them if needs be."

She added: "If I employed somebody who used that language; some of it is absolutely disgraceful, they'd be out the door! They'd be out the door, it's horrible!"

Her studio guest replied: "It us, it's unacceptable and that's exactly why players take the knee before they a match, because they're showing that we are together and they're saying that we are together and we won't tolerate racism.

"But what happens straight after the match, it was literally instant - Saka, Rashford, Sancho - all receiving racist messages on their social media accounts.

"I do think social media companies need to take accountability. They have to. It's unacceptable, they do not deserve it."

Lorraine replied: "W have to say it is a minority; the vast majority of fans at home and in the stadium just wanted to applaud them."
