Loris Karius speaks out on Liverpool future and dismisses 'boring' Champions League final questions

Loris Karius admits he does not know what the future holds for him at Liverpool.

The goalkeeper has once again left Anfield on loan, this time moving to Bundesliga side Union Berlin at the end of last month.

It is the keeper's third loan spell away from the Reds in three years, having also spent two seasons at Besiktas in Turkey.

Karius has not made a competitive appearance for Liverpool since his disastrous display in the 2018 Champions League final, which saw him concede soft goals in a 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid before being diagnosed with concussion post-match.

The 27-year-old told German media that he was unsure if he would be heading out on loan again this season, but eventually opted to join Union Berlin in order to get first-team football.

“I wasn’t sure whether to go or stay,” he told BILD.

“The option to stay was definitely there because, even if you are not the first goalkeeper, you get your playing time through the cup competitions and the many games.

“Then the decision matured that I wanted to be in goal week after week.

“I still have a few more years of contract with Liverpool, and I don’t know what the situation will look like next summer.”

Having made 175 career league appearances already, Karius says he is pleased with the level of experience he can bring as a goalkeeper.

The former Mainz stopper also argued that his experiences, good and bad, such as the Champions League final, will only help him become a stronger player.

He told Kicker: "I have gained experience that not too many at my age can boast. I took everything with me, positive and negative, and I'm out of one or the other situation also came out stronger.

"On the whole, I think that some things, especially here in Germany, were rated too negatively and in some cases will still be."

Yet Karius shutdown further questions about the Champions League final, arguing that he has played 60 games since that match.

"That was two years ago," he said. "I have played over 60 games since then.

"I came here to perform well. Of course, I was away from Germany for a long time. But that doesn't really matter now.

"I ticked it off for a long time. The only ones who want to talk about it are the journalists. For me it's been boring for a long time"
