Loris Karius' ex-team-mate hits out at his treatment after Liverpool's Champions League final defeat

A former team-mates of Loris Karius’ has leapt to his defence as well as taking aim at Liverpool for the way they have treated him.

Karius made a number of errors during his time between the sticks for the Reds, with his most high-profile mistake coming against Real Madrid in the 2018 Champions League final.

The Reds would go on to lose the game in Kiev 3-1, with the German responsible for Madrid’s first and third goals on the night.

The following summer and Reds boss Jurgen Klopp opted to send the stopper to Besiktas on a two-year loan, something which his former team-mate, Giulio Donati, believes was an overreaction by the Anfield club.

"Unfortunately, the media and all the people around football chose to blow up on a mistake,” the Leece fullback and former Mainz man told Tribalfootball.com.

"But we can't forget that Liverpool reached that final even thanks to him.

"He was a young guy who had made a mistake in a final. It's true that it was a very important match, but it could happen and it shouldn't have deleted all the good things he had done.

"I'm sure he would have done well in the following years at Liverpool, but sadly we will not have the evidence now he's in Turkey."

Before the defender added: "When I used to train with him and we played together, having someone like him behind you gave a lot of confidence: it was always something very positive."
