Loris Karius could make Liverpool return two years on from Champions League final nightmare

Loris Karius is 'to make Liverpool return' just two years after his Champions League howler.

According to reports, the German goalkeeper, who has spent the past two seasons on loan with Turkish club Beşiktaş, is expected to return to Anfield two years on from his errors against Real Madrid in 2018.

Karius threw the ball at French striker Karim Benzema, allowing the forward to score the easiest goal of his career, and failed to catch a long-range Gareth Bale strike, allowing Madrid to secure their 13th European title with complete ease.

His nightmare final prompted Klopp to send him on a two-year loan spell to Turkey, but after a less than impressive time with the club, it has been reported that the Turkish side have no intention of initiating the £7.25million clause in his contract to make the switch permanent.

As reported by The Athletic, sources close to Karius believe that he will be returning to Merseyside in the summer, unless another club attempts to sign the shot-stopper before then.

Arriving from Mainz in 2016, the ex-Manchester City youngster never really cemented his place between the Liverpool sticks and faced a constant battle with Simon Mignolet for the number one shirt.

Much like his Anfield career, Karius struggled to impress the fans and was even jeered by Besiktas supporters when second-tier BB Erzurumspor knocked them out of the Turkish Cup in January 2020.

If the unlikely happens and the German remains at Anfield, he will be returning to a club that has not only propelled themselves to the top of the footballing pyramid, but who signed a world-class keeper for a fee over £65million.

Not only would Karius be returning behind Brazilian and Liverpool No 1 Alisson, he would also find himself behind current backup goalkeeper Adrian, who has massively impressed since he arrived in the summer.

The Spaniard was called into action in the first game of the Reds season after Alisson suffered a calf injury in the first half that resulted in a 10-week layoff.

He also played a massive part in Liverpool winning the UEFA Supercup after saving Tammy Abraham's spot-kick in the shootout.

With the Reds expected to send young Irish shot-stopper Caoimhín Kelleher out on loan next season, Karius could battle 36-year-old Andy Longergan for the Reds third-choice goalkeeper, should Liverpool offer Lonergan a new contract, that is.
