Lori Vallow told friend she claimed to have cancer to convince son's grandma to take care of him, court document says

Lori Vallow, the Idaho woman whose two children's bodies were found on her new husband's property in June months after their disappearances, is now accused of claiming to have cancer to convince her son's grandmother to take care of him, according to newly released court documents.

The allegations come from a friend of Vallow, Melanie Gibb, who started collaborating with police in November after Vallow and her husband, Chad Daybell, asked her to lie to law enforcement, the documents released Tuesday assert, according to East Idaho News.

"Vallow informed Gibb that she had arranged for JJ to go live with his grandma, Kay Woodcock," says Rexburg Police detective Lt. Ron Ball.

"Vallow further told Gibb she had told Kay that she had cancer in order to convince Kay Woodcock to take JJ. Vallow further elaborated to Gibb that she had traveled with JJ and handed him off to Kay in an airport."

The children, 17-year-old Tylee and 7-year-old JJ, went missing last September. Their bodies were found buried on Daybell's property in Fremont County, Idaho on June 9.

Vallow, 47, faces multiple charges, including two counts of desertion and nonsupport of dependent children. This week, she was hit with additional charges of conspiracy to destroy, alter or conceal evidence.

The 51-year-old Daybell, who married Vallow last year, was arrested last month and charged with two felony counts of destruction, alteration or concealment of evidence. A pair of conspiracy charges against him came down Tuesday.

The case garnered widespread attention throughout the United States, with rumors about the couple's alleged ties to a doomsday cult adding to the public interest.
