Lorenzo Insigne 'fine' underlines mess in Napoli camp ahead of Liverpool clash

Napoli's captain and talisman, Lorenzo Insigne, has reportedly been fined €350,000 - around £300,000 - after being identified as the "ringleader" in a squad "mutiny" that rocked the Italian side earlier this month.

Liverpool are out for revenge at Anfield tonight after late goals by Dries Mertens - that a contentious penalty green-lit by the VAR - and Fernando Llorente were enough to overcome the Reds in their opening Group E game in September.

But Liverpool face a side in turmoil, one that has not won in the league since 19 October and one, more importantly, , sparked by a refusal to attend a week-long training retreat ahead of the recent international break.

This incident led De Laurentiis to hand out substantial sanctions to the squad, with reports indicating that Napoli's president was pushing ahead with fines of 25% for every single member of his squad, except for the injured Kevin Malcuit.

Football Italia reports that at the height of the rebellion, midfielder Allan had "squared up" to Napoli's president and his son, vice-president Edo De Laurentiis.

Insigne has since replaced the Brazilian as the "ringleader" of the "mutiny," according to local Italian media, Gazzetta dello Sport and Corriere dello.

Both men are reported to have been fined the equivalent of 50% of their monthly salaries.

Liverpool shook off that opening day disappointment in Naples to win three consecutive games, leaving them top of Group E with two games to play. A win on Merseyside tomorrow will guarantee them a place in the knock-out stages.

An elbow injury will see Insigne - who has been with Napoli since he was 15 and has appeared more than 300 times for the Neapolitan side - miss tonight's clash at Anfield, alongside full back Fouzi Ghoulam.
