Lord of the Rings' Elijah Wood witnessed 9/11 attack with Sean Bean and Orlando Bloom

Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood has recalled the horrifying moment when he, Sean Bean and Orlando Bloom witnessed the 9/11 attacks.

The actor, 40, played the heroic Frodo Baggins in the iconic fantasy trilogy.

He was joined in the films subtitled The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King by both Sean and Orlando.

Now speaking to Empire magazine, Elijah has recalled the scary moment when he and his fellow cast members saw what had happened at the World Trade Centre in New York City on September 11, 2001.

He revealed the trio had been on a plane from Newark Airport to Los Angeles when they witnessed the terror attack.

"We looked out the window and could see that one of the buildings was on fire."

The actor then explained that their flight was forced to land early after the attack happened.

"We landed in Cincinnati, where I stayed for about a week before we could take a flight again."

Elijah concluded: "So, yeah, I directly experienced it. It was super surreal and scary."
