Amazon has confirmed rumours that their upcoming Lord Of The Rings series will take place before the events of Peter Jackson’s trilogy.
The streaming service’s adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s work will be set during the fictional Second Age. Jackson’s trilogy took place during the Third Age.
The official Lord Of The Ring’s Twitter account revealed the news alongside a map of Middle-earth.
The Second Age covers a time period of 3,441 years. During this time, Sauron forged the Ring Of Power, with the Second Age coming to an end following his defeat at the hands of the King of Gonder, Isildur, who was seen in Jackson’s trilogy.
The critically acclaimed films – consisting of The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002) and The Return Of The King (2003) – focus on the heroes’ attempts to destroy the Ring Of Power and its creator.
Amazon’s series will see JD Payne and Patrick McKay serve as executive producers. There is no word yet on casting or a release date.
Rumours previously claimed the series would focus on a young Aragorn – however, the character, previously played by Viggo Mortensen, was born in the Third Age.
