Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood is backing Scots band Mogwai's race to number one on the Official UK Album chart.

Lead singer, Stuart Braithwaite urged fans to buy the record.

Stuart, who hails from South Lanarkshire, wrote on Twitter: "THIS IS NOT A DRILL.

"In scarcely believable news we are currently the biggest selling album in the UK.

"If you haven’t bought it and want to, can you please do it before Friday?

"Not getting my hopes up too much but . . .bloody hell."

Elijah, who played Frodo in the iconic movie trilogy, shared Stuart's tweet and wrote, 'Come on Folks!' amassing hundreds of likes within an hour.

The 40-year-old actor's tweet didn't go unnoticed by Mogwai's guitarist and pianist, Barr Burns.

He wrote: "What the . . ."

The famed actor's reaction sparked a huge reaction from Mogwai fans.

One commented: "OMG Elijah Wood likes Mogwai?

"What a dreamboat."

Another added: "Yaaaasssss!

"Frodo knows the guid stuff!"

A third posted: "Yes Elijah.

"I knew you were a man of taste."

Official Chart revealed Mogwai as the latest front-runner through a statement on their website and social media platforms.

It read: "Mogwai lead the race for this week’s Number 1 album with As The Love Continues

"Mogwai are leading an incredibly close race for Number 1 on this week’s Official Albums Chart with As The Love Continues.

"The Scottish post-rock group are Number 1 on today’s Official Chart Update – though just 1,800 chart sales currently separate the Top 3.

"Should Mogwai’s tenth studio album continue its momentum, it would be their first to top the Official Albums Chart, and third consecutive Top 10 studio album, following 2014’s Rave Tapes and 2017’s Every Country’s Sun."

The band, hailed for hits such as Helicon and 2 Rights Make 1 Wrong, formed in Glasgow in 1995.
