Huge crowds have turned out in glorious sunshine to see the annual Lord Mayor’s Show in the City of London.

The parade is an annual celebration that pays homage to the new Lord Mayor.

The procession travels three miles from Bank to Aldwych via Fleet Street, St Paul’s and Embankment, marking an 800-year-old tradition.

Images from the event show performers and military bands joining in with the festivities.

This year’s parade involves around 7,000 people, 200 horses and around 150 floats including carriages and marching bands.

Peter Estlin is the 691st Lord Mayor of London and can be seen in photos riding along the route in his Gold State Coach.

He was set to spend an hour and a half at the Royal Courts before re-joining the procession at Temple Place and finishing at Mansion House at approximately 2.45pm.

The river pageant with fireworks will not take place this year.

What is the Mayor of London's role?

The Lord Mayor of the City of London acts as a spokesperson for the city.

He leads overseas business delegations to key international markets on behalf of the UK’s financial and professional services industry.

The Mayor meets government representatives from around the world, alongside business leaders and policy makes at home and abroad.

He also works to identify new business opportunities and reassure them that the UK is a good destination for foreign investment.

The tradition dates back to when King John was persuaded to let the City of London elect its own mayor on the condition that the new mayor must travel from the City to Westminster to swear loyalty to the crown.
