Lord Mayor's ceremonial jewellery stolen during break-in at council premises

Police are investigating after ceremonial jewellery belonging to the Lord Mayor of Bristol was stolen from a council building.

Officers were called to a break-in at council premises near Brunel Lock around 5.30am this morning (Monday, Feb 24).

Police said an unknown number of suspects forced their way into the property in Smeaton Road and stole two safes, with at least one containing civic ceremonial jewellery.

A spokesperson for the force said: “We were called this morning (Monday 24 February) at approximately 5.30am to reports of a break-in at a unit in Hotwells, in Bristol.

"We believe the incident occurred at some point in the early hours of this morning.

"Police attended the scene and cordoned off the area. Investigations are ongoing.”

Bristol City Council has said it is still assessing the full extent of the damage caused during the break-in as well as exactly what was taken.

Avon and Somerset Police are asking anyone with information to contact them on 101 and quote the reference 5220044814.

Bristol's current Lord Mayor is Liberal Democrat councillor Jos Clark.
