Lord Mayor of Dublin Tom Brabazon leads anniversary tributes to ALONE Ireland founder Willie Bermingham

The Lord Mayor of Dublin has led tributes to ALONE Ireland founder Willie Bermingham on the 30th anniversary of his death.

A Dublin firefighter, Mr Bermingham founded the charity ALONE after seeing the appalling conditions older people were living in throughout the city in tenements in the cold winter of 1976.

The Lord Mayor Tom Brabazon today hailed Mr Bermingham, who died of cancer at the age of 48, as “a hero of Dublin”.

Mr Brabazon said: “He saw something that wasn’t right and he took action. Not many people are willing to act when they see injustice, but he did.”

ALONE CEO Seán Moynihan added: “Willie was and remains a huge loss to his family, ALONE and all of us.”

Dublin Fire Brigade extended its deepest sympathies to Mr Bermingham’s family.
